Konrad of Marburg

c. 1180–1233 · 13th century · Also known as Conrad of Marburg

Konrad of Marburg was a German priest and the first papal inquisitor in Germany. As confessor to Elizabeth of Hungary he imposed a harsh regime on her, and from 1231 he led a violent campaign against supposed heretics in the Rhineland and Hesse. After he accused Count Henry III of Sayn and failed to convict him at Mainz in 1233, he was murdered by knights on his return journey.
