Kotrag

7th century · 7th century

Kotrag was a Bulgar leader of the 7th century, by tradition a son of Kubrat of Old Great Bulgaria. When Khazar pressure broke up his father's realm after Kubrat's death, he led his followers north to the middle Volga, where their settlement became the basis of Volga Bulgaria. He is known mainly from later Byzantine accounts of Kubrat's sons dividing his people.
