Kumari (goddess)
Kumari is the tradition in Nepal of worshipping a young girl before puberty as the living embodiment of the goddess Taleju, a form of Durga. Chosen from the Newar Shakya caste, the Royal Kumari of Kathmandu lives in the Kumari Ghar beside Hanuman Dhoka and appears in public at festivals such as Indra Jatra. The custom grew closely tied to the Malla and later the Shah kings, whom she blessed.
