Lower Macedonia

Lower Macedonia was the lowland core of the ancient Kingdom of Macedon, the coastal plains around the Thermaic Gulf watered by the Haliacmon and Axios rivers. It held the royal centres of Aigai and Pella and was the home of the Argead kings, who gradually brought the cantons of Upper Macedonia in the western mountains under their rule.
