Manie Maritz

1876–1940 · 20th century

Manie Maritz was a Boer general who led the Maritz Rebellion of 1914. A commando leader in the Second Boer War, he later joined the Union Defence Force, but when South Africa entered the First World War on Britain's side he went over to the Germans in South West Africa with part of his command. After the rising failed he fled to Angola, later returned to serve a prison sentence, and in his last years openly admired Nazi Germany.
