Mersa Gawasis
Mersa Gawasis is an archaeological site on the Red Sea coast of Egypt, south of Safaga, where a harbour was used by Middle Kingdom expeditions to Punt and other lands. Excavations since 2001 have found man-made caves with ship timbers, coiled ropes, cargo boxes and inscriptions naming Punt. The ships were built in the Nile valley, carried across the desert in pieces and reassembled on the coast.
