Nagarjuna Sagar Dam

1955–1967 · 20th century

The Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is a large masonry dam on the Krishna river on the border of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, India, built between 1955 and 1967 for irrigation and hydroelectric power. Its reservoir flooded the valley of Nagarjunakonda, site of the ancient Ikshvaku capital Vijayapuri. Before the flooding, archaeologists excavated the valley and moved several monuments to an island museum and to higher ground.
