Naranjo

c. 500 BCE–950 · 6th century BCE · Also known as Wak Kab'nal

Naranjo, called Wak Kab'nal in Mayan, is a Maya city in the Petén Basin of Guatemala, about 50 kilometres east of Tikal, occupied from about 500 BCE to 950 CE and at its height in the Late Classic period; its rulers were the Holy Lords of Sa'aal. In 546 it came under the control of Calakmul, which in 682 sent Lady Six Sky, a daughter of the Dos Pilas ruler, to re-establish its dynasty; acting as ruler, possibly as regent for her son, she oversaw attacks that defeated Tikal in 695. Tikal defeated Naranjo in 744 and took its ruler captive. Its final abandonment may have followed political turmoil and a severe drought of 810, and the site has been severely looted.
