Naser al-Din Shah Qajar

1831–1896 · 19th century

Naser al-Din Shah was the Qajar shah of Iran from 1848 to 1896, the longest reign of the dynasty. His minister Amir Kabir founded the Dar ol-Fonun college, and the shah travelled to Europe, but he relied on foreign loans and concessions, provoking the tobacco protest of 1891–1892. He centralised power, ending Kurdish autonomy in Ardalan in 1867, and was assassinated in 1896.
