Nugaal Valley

The Nugaal Valley is a long valley in northern Somalia running south-east from the Sool region to the Indian Ocean near Eyl. Seasonal water and grazing make it important to pastoral clans. At the turn of the 20th century it was a stronghold of the Dervish movement of Mohammed Abdullah Hassan, and today it lies largely within Puntland, whose capital Garowe stands in it.
