Office du Niger

1932 · 20th century

The Office du Niger is a large irrigation authority in the inner Niger delta of Mali, founded by the French colonial government in 1932. Its Markala dam diverted Niger water to grow cotton and rice, and settlers were brought in, often under forced labour, to farm the schemes, which yielded far less than planned. It continues as a state agency managing one of West Africa's largest irrigated areas, mainly for rice.
