One-party state
The one-party state, in which a single party monopolises power, emerged in Soviet Russia after 1917 and became the form of communist, fascist and many post-colonial regimes. Its defenders claimed unity, stability and development; its record includes famines, terror and stagnation as well as rapid industrialisation.
