Osceola

1804–1838 · 19th century

Osceola was a Seminole war leader who led resistance to removal from Florida in the Second Seminole War. In 1837 he was seized by American troops while meeting them under a flag of truce, an act widely condemned. He died in prison at Fort Moultrie in South Carolina in 1838 and became a lasting symbol of Native resistance.
