Second Seminole War

1835–1842 · 19th century · Also known as Florida War

The Second Seminole War was fought from 1835 to 1842 between the United States and the Seminole of Florida, who resisted removal to Indian Territory. Led by chiefs such as Osceola and Micanopy, the Seminole waged a guerrilla war in the swamps that cost the United States heavily in money and lives. Most Seminoles were eventually removed west, but a few hundred stayed in Florida.
