Ottoman conquest of Egypt
The Ottoman conquest of Egypt was the campaign of Sultan Selim I that ended Mamluk rule in 1517. Following victory at Marj Dabiq in Syria in 1516, Ottoman forces took Cairo. The conquest ended the Mamluk Sultanate and the shadow Abbasid caliphate maintained in Cairo, the last institutional remnant of the Abbasid Caliphate.
