Prince Rupert of the Rhine was a nephew of Charles I of England, a Royalist cavalry commander in the English Civil War and later an admiral. A leading backer of the fur-trading voyages to Hudson Bay, he became the first governor of the Hudson's Bay Company when it was chartered in 1670, and the company's vast territory was named Rupert's Land after him.
