Province of Hanover

1866–1946 · 19th century

The Province of Hanover was a province of Prussia created after Prussia annexed the Kingdom of Hanover in 1866, with its capital at Hanover. It covered most of present-day Lower Saxony and in 1922 absorbed the former Waldeck district of Pyrmont. It was dissolved after the Second World War, when the British occupation authorities created the State of Hanover in 1946, merged into Lower Saxony later that year.
