Qabus

d. 1012 · 11th century · Also known as Qabus ibn Wushmgir, Shams al-Ma'ali Qabus, Qabus ibn Vushmgir

Qabus ibn Wushmgir was a ruler of the Ziyarid dynasty of Gurgan and Tabaristan, reigning from 977 to 981 and again from 997 to 1012. Driven out by the Buyids for sheltering Fakhr al-Dawla, he spent years in exile among the Samanids before recovering his lands. A learned prose stylist and patron, he built the Gonbad-e Qabus, a brick tomb tower of 1006–1007, and was deposed and killed by his own officers.
