Qarataghliq

17th–18th century · 17th century · Also known as Black Mountain khojas

The Qarataghliq, or 'Black Mountain' faction, was one of two rival branches of the Naqshbandi khojas in Kashgaria, descended from Ishaq Wali, a son of the Sufi master Makhdum-i Azam. Favoured by later khans of Yarkent, they were bitter rivals of the Aqtaghliq ('White Mountain') khojas, and their struggle helped bring about the Dzungar conquest of 1680. Both factions lost power after the Qing conquest of 1759.
