Qarawiyyin Mosque

859 · 9th century · Also known as al-Qarawiyyin, University of al-Qarawiyyin

The Qarawiyyin Mosque is a mosque and centre of learning in Fez, Morocco, founded in 857 or 859 by Fatima al-Fihri, the daughter of a merchant from Kairouan. Greatly enlarged under the Almoravids in the 1130s and 1140s, when much of its present decoration was added, it became one of the leading centres of Islamic scholarship in the western Mediterranean, and its university is often described as the oldest still operating.
