Raj Singh I

1629–1680 · 17th century

Raj Singh I was Maharana of Mewar from 1652 to 1680. He opposed Aurangzeb's reimposition of the jizya in 1679 and supported the Rathores of Marwar in the Rajput war against the Mughal emperor. He gave shelter to the image of Shrinathji at Nathdwara in 1672 and built the great reservoir of Rajsamand Lake, whose embankment carries the Raj Prashasti, one of the longest Sanskrit inscriptions in India.
