Russian judicial reform of 1864
The Russian judicial reform of 1864 was one of the Great Reforms of Tsar Alexander II, which reorganised the courts of the Russian Empire. It introduced public trials, trial by jury for serious criminal cases, independent judges, an organised legal profession and justices of the peace. Accounts of the Russian Empire treat it as a significant step towards modern legal institutions within an autocratic state.
