Sahagún

Sahagún is a town in the province of León in north-western Spain, on the pilgrimage road to Santiago de Compostela. Its Benedictine monastery of San Benito, richly endowed by Alfonso VI and reformed on the model of Cluny, was one of the most powerful in medieval León, and Alfonso was buried there. In 1085 the king granted a charter, or fuero, to the merchants and settlers, many of them French, who formed the town around it.
