Sancho VII of Navarre

c. 1157–1234 · 13th century · Also known as Sancho the Strong

Sancho VII, called the Strong, was king of Navarre from 1194 to 1234. In 1212 he fought with Castile and Aragon at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, a decisive Christian victory over the Almohads, and the chains in Navarre's arms are said to recall it. He died childless, the last of the Jiménez dynasty, and the throne passed to his nephew Theobald of Champagne.
