Sayram
Sayram is an ancient town in southern Kazakhstan, east of Shymkent, on the site usually identified with medieval Isfijab. It was an oasis town on the Silk Road route along the middle Syr Darya and a centre of Islamic learning, and is known as the birthplace of the Sufi master Ahmad Yasawi. Held by the Kazakh khans from the sixteenth century, it was sacked in the Dzungar raids of Galdan in the 1680s.
