Sigismund I the Old

1467–1548 · 16th century · Also known as Sigismund I of Poland

Sigismund I the Old was king of Poland and grand duke of Lithuania from 1506 to 1548. By the Treaty of Kraków in 1525 he accepted the homage of his nephew Albert of Brandenburg-Ansbach, who secularised the Teutonic Order's lands as the Duchy of Prussia under Polish overlordship. His reign saw the Renaissance flourish at the royal court in Kraków.
