Sopara

Also known as Shurparaka, Nala Sopara

Sopara, ancient Shurparaka, is a town north of Mumbai in Palghar district of Maharashtra, India, now part of the Nala Sopara area. It was one of the chief ports of the Konkan coast from the Maurya period, when an edict of Ashoka was inscribed there, and remained an important harbour under the Satavahanas and the Silaharas. A Buddhist stupa excavated there in 1882 yielded a set of relic caskets.
