Suez Crisis

1956 · 20th century

The Suez Crisis was the international crisis of 1956 in which Britain, France and Israel invaded Egypt after Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalised the Suez Canal. Under pressure from the United States and the Soviet Union, the invaders withdrew. Accounts of the British Empire treat it as a humiliation that showed Britain could no longer act as an independent imperial power.
