Swabian Circle

1500–1806 · 16th century

The Swabian Circle was one of the Imperial Circles into which the Holy Roman Empire was divided from 1500 to organise defence, coinage and peace-keeping. It covered south-western Germany and was the most fragmented of all, with nearly a hundred members, including Württemberg, Baden, prince-bishoprics, imperial abbeys, counts and over thirty free imperial cities. It was among the most active circles until 1806.
