Talent
The talent was a large unit of weight used in the ancient Mediterranean and Near East, commonly used to measure quantities of silver and gold for payments. Indemnities imposed by victorious powers were often reckoned in talents. Accounts of the Punic Empire note the 3,200 talents of silver Carthage was forced to pay Rome after the First Punic War, and accounts of the Seleucid Empire record the 15,000 talents imposed by the Treaty of Apamea.
