Truman Doctrine
The Truman Doctrine was a United States foreign policy announced by President Harry S. Truman on 12 March 1947, pledging support to countries threatened by communist subversion or outside pressure. It was prompted by Britain's withdrawal of aid to Greece during its civil war and to Turkey, which then received American military and economic help. It is often seen as the start of the Cold War policy of containment.
