Uesugi Norimasa

1523–1579 · 16th century

Uesugi Norimasa was the Kantō kanrei, the shogun's deputy for eastern Japan, from the Yamanouchi branch of the Uesugi family. Defeated by the Later Hōjō clan, notably at the Battle of Kawagoe in 1546, he lost his base in Kōzuke and fled to Echigo, to his family's former deputy Nagao Kagetora. In 1561 he adopted Kagetora, passing on the Uesugi name and the office of kanrei to the future Uesugi Kenshin.
