Valdemar II of Denmark

1170–1241 · 13th century · Also known as Valdemar the Victorious

Valdemar II, called the Victorious, was king of Denmark from 1202 to 1241. He extended Danish power along the southern Baltic and in 1219 led a crusade to northern Estonia, landing at Lindanise, where he built the castle that grew into Tallinn. Captured in 1223 and defeated at Bornhöved in 1227, he lost most of his German conquests but kept Estonia, and issued the Code of Jutland in 1241.
