Valdemar IV of Denmark

c. 1320–1375 · 14th century · Also known as Valdemar Atterdag

Valdemar IV, known as Valdemar Atterdag, was King of Denmark from 1340 to 1375 and rebuilt the kingdom after years in which its provinces had been pawned to foreign lords, recovering Zealand, Scania and other lands. In 1361 he invaded Gotland and took Visby, provoking war with the Hanseatic League, which forced him to accept the Treaty of Stralsund in 1370. His daughter Margaret I later founded the Kalmar Union.
