Battle of Lindanise

1219 · 13th century · Also known as Battle of Valdemar · Part of the Livonian Crusade

The Battle of Lindanise was fought on 15 June 1219 at the site of present-day Tallinn, when the crusading army of King Valdemar II of Denmark defeated the Estonians of Rävala. The Danes then built a castle on Toompea, around which the town of Reval grew. Legend holds that the Danish flag, the Dannebrog, fell from the sky during the battle.
