Venetian Dalmatia

1420–1797 · 15th century

Venetian Dalmatia was the Republic of Venice's possession on the eastern Adriatic coast, held from 1420, when Venice bought the Hungarian claim and took over most coastal towns, until the fall of the republic in 1797. Governed from Zadar, it supplied sailors, timber and soldiers. The wars with the Ottomans extended it inland in the late 17th and early 18th centuries; it then passed to Austria.
