Werner I of Strasbourg

d. 1028 · 11th century · Also known as Werner of Habsburg

Werner I was bishop of Strasbourg from 1001 to 1028 and a member of the early Habsburg family. A loyal supporter of Emperor Henry II, he began the Romanesque cathedral of Strasbourg in 1015. Tradition credits him, with his relative Count Radbot, with building Habsburg Castle in the Aargau around 1020 to 1030, the castle that gave the dynasty its name. He died in Constantinople while on an imperial embassy.
