Zhang Yi

d. 309 BCE · 4th century BCE

Zhang Yi was a political strategist of the Warring States period who served as chief minister of Qin. He promoted the 'horizontal alliance' (lianheng), persuading states to ally with Qin rather than unite against it. In 313 BCE he induced King Huai of Chu to break his alliance with Qi by promising land, then broke the promise, and Chu's defeats in the wars that followed in 312 BCE greatly strengthened Qin.
