Zhang Yichao

799–872 · 9th century

Zhang Yichao was a local leader of Dunhuang who in 848 drove out the Tibetan garrison as the Tibetan Empire disintegrated, and went on to free other towns of the Hexi Corridor. The Tang court recognised him in 851 as military governor of the Guiyi Circuit. He later moved to Chang'an, and his family and then the Cao family ruled Dunhuang.
