Duchy of Trent

569 CE – 774 CE (approx.) · capital Trento

Lombard frontier duchy in the Adige valley guarding the Brenner route into Italy against Franks and Bavarians.

Origins

Soon after the Lombard invasion of 568, a duchy was set up at Tridentum (Trento) to control the Adige valley, the main route from the Brenner Pass into the Po plain. Paul the Deacon names Euin as its first duke, who repelled Frankish invasions in the 570s and 580s and married a Bavarian princess.

Rule and society

The dukes of Trent were military lords on a sensitive frontier, dealing by war and marriage with the Franks and the Bavarians to the north. Their territory covered much of modern Trentino and the upper Adige. Duke Alahis rebelled against King Cunipert, seized Pavia and was killed at the battle of Coronate around 689. Otherwise little is recorded of their government.

Decline and legacy

After Charlemagne's conquest of the Lombard Kingdom in 774, Trent was placed under Frankish counts as part of the Carolingian Kingdom of Italy. In 1027 Emperor Conrad II gave the county to the bishops of Trent, founding the prince-bishopric.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
