Abu al-Misk Kafur

905–968 · 10th century · Also known as Kafur al-Ikhshidi

Abu al-Misk Kafur was a eunuch of African origin, once a slave, who became ruler of Ikhshidid Egypt. After al-Ikhshid died in 946 he governed as regent for his two sons and from 966 in his own name, holding Egypt, Syria and the Hijaz. The poet al-Mutanabbi first praised and then satirised him. Soon after his death in 968 the Fatimids conquered Egypt.
