Abu'l-Khayr Khan

1412–1468 · 15th century · Also known as Abulkhair Khan of the Uzbeks

Abu'l-Khayr Khan was a Shibanid descendant of Genghis Khan who ruled the nomadic Uzbeks of the steppe east of the Ural River from 1428 until his death. He united many tribes, took towns on the Syr Darya and raided Transoxiana, but after a defeat by the Oirats in 1457 his authority weakened. The sultans Kerei and Janibek broke away to found the Kazakh Khanate, and his grandson Muhammad Shaybani later conquered Transoxiana.
