Aulic War Council

1556–1848 · 16th century · Also known as Hofkriegsrat

The Aulic War Council, or Hofkriegsrat, was the central military administration of the Habsburg Monarchy, established in Vienna in 1556. It oversaw the army, fortresses, supply and the Military Frontier against the Ottomans, and for long periods also conducted relations with the Ottoman Empire. Often criticised for interfering in the operations of field commanders, it was replaced by a Ministry of War in 1848.
