Battle of Nineveh (627)

627 CE · 7th century · Part of the Byzantine–Sasanian War of 602–628

The Battle of Nineveh was fought in 627 CE near the ruins of ancient Nineveh in northern Mesopotamia, where the Byzantine emperor Heraclius defeated a Sasanian army. It was the climax of the Byzantine-Sasanian war of 602–628. The defeat led to the overthrow of Khosrow II and a succession crisis that left the Sasanian Empire exhausted on the eve of the Arab conquests.
