Bayram Khwaja

d. 1380 · 14th century

Bayram Khwaja was the first notable leader of the Qara Qoyunlu, a Turkmen tribal confederation of eastern Anatolia and northern Iraq. Active around Lake Van, Erciş and Mosul, he emerged between the 1350s and 1370s as a vassal, and at times a rival, of the Jalayirid dynasty. His successor Qara Muhammad and Qara Muhammad's son Qara Yusuf built the confederation into an independent state.
