Council of Regency of Spain and the Indies

1810–1814 · 19th century

The Council of Regency of Spain and the Indies governed Spain in the name of the captive Ferdinand VII during the Peninsular War, replacing the Supreme Central Junta in 1810. Based at Cádiz, it summoned the Cortes that wrote the constitution of 1812. Many juntas in Spanish America, including those of Quito, Caracas and Buenos Aires, refused to recognise it.
