Dahabshiil

1970– · 20th century

Dahabshiil is a money-transfer and banking company founded in 1970 by Mohamed Said Duale in Burao, in what is now Somaliland. It grew into the largest remittance company in the Horn of Africa, moving money from the Somali diaspora to families at home and operating in many countries. In a state without international recognition or access to global banking, it became vital to the economy.
