Danishmend Gazi

d. 1084 · 11th century · Also known as Danishmend Ahmad Gazi

Danishmend Gazi was a Turkmen leader who founded the Danishmendid principality in central and north-eastern Anatolia after the Seljuk victory at Manzikert in 1071, taking Sivas, Tokat and Amasya. His exploits against the Byzantines inspired the Danishmendname, a Turkish heroic epic. His dynasty rivalled the Seljuks of Rum until its conquest in the 1170s.
