Dead Sea
The Dead Sea is a salt lake in the Jordan Rift Valley between Jordan to the east and Israel and the West Bank to the west, its shore the lowest land on Earth. In antiquity the kingdom of Moab lay on the plateau east of it. In the crusader and Ayyubid periods the castle of Kerak, east of the sea, controlled routes between Syria, Egypt and Arabia.
