Eastern Turkestan

Eastern Turkestan is a historical name for the Tarim Basin and surrounding lands, roughly corresponding to southern Xinjiang in north-western China. The Qing Empire conquered the region in the eighteenth century after defeating the Dzungars, and it later reasserted control after the uprisings of the nineteenth century.
